 WECT's reporter and anchor Delaney Tarpley did an impromptu interview late yesterday afternoon with me in conjunction with their story about Robert Ford's documentary entitled FLYTRAP TOWN - a passionate plea to the world to save our most valuable resources here in Southeast NC, namely our Wetlands that support this most unique life form . Venus Flytraps only inhabit ecotones within a 75 mile radius of Wilmington NC. Not the jungles of Costa Rica or the Amazon basin or the exotic regions of Southeast Asia. Right where I live - in and around Little Ole Boiling Spring Lakes NC. Nowhere else in the world Ya'll but right here. Let that sink in. When we lose this habitat they are gone forever in the wild. Extinct. That's such a final word... I feel it is my duty to do everything I can to preserve these marvels of evolution and their habitats that also support my beloved Alligators and even us. Nature has a marvelous system in place utilizing Wetlands as sponges and filters, soaking up rains and percolating environmental toxins through their porous soils. Wetlands are Nature's protectors and support a wide array of flora and fauna. We have to realize how interconnected we all are and dependent on this system to work as Nature intended. Nature here is becoming unbalanced and she will inevitably reclaim what is hers - sooner rather than later. Wetlands are here as a buffer for a reason. Let's not all drown because of the greed and profit of this army of unscrupulous land grabbers and developers that have invaded our sacred Swamps. We need to make our voices as locals heard above the din of the destruction in the name of progress in this most precious of counties called Brunswick where I live. Rant over. For now...
